In the early hours of July 3, 1985, an unidentified object splashed down off the Northern California coast. The NRO recovered a sealed, briefcase-sized container and moved it to a secret facility, where it stayed silent for nearly a year. At exactly 2:00 a.m. on July 18, 1986, it opened to reveal a power and two-way data connection. It replied in an unknown language, so the team began playing chess with it to decode that language. The object only responded between 2:00 and 4:00 a.m. Pacific time, so a skeleton crew had to stay awake every night and keep playing. The program was called Nightshift.
